Gulfstream Park: Amazing Florida Horseracing

Many people do not think of Florida as being horse country, but there’s just as much going on in the racing industry in Florida as there is in Kentucky. Some of the country’s finest horses make their way to Florida each year and their favorite place of competition is Gulfstream Park.

The annual meet of Gulfstream Park takes place January through April and the park is considered one of America’s most important horse racing venues. The park was opened on February 1, 1939 and had an initial crowd of 18,000. This first meet was only four days in length. In 1944, the track was reopened by James Donn, Sr. for a 20 day meet in December.

In 1946, the first Gulfstream Park Handicap was held and in 1952, the first Florida Derby ran. It was also that year the grandstand was expanded and the clubhouse was built. James Donn Jr. took his father’s position as president of the park in 1961 and enlarged the clubhouse and installed a totalisator board (largest in the world at the time) in the infield. The park saw even more popularity when they were awarded middle dates for a 40 day meet, which would last from January through April.

In 1982, the grandstand was renovated with new architecture and the clubhouse was renovated in 1984. The track was then renovated in 1986 and the Gulf dome was also added, this was a domed dining terrace. The track really took on an elite status in racing when it hosted the Breeders’ Cup for the first time in 1989. The park would later host the two-day event again in 1992 and 1999.

The track has seen several new renovations in the past few years including a $130 million renovation to the grandstand and clubhouse again in 2004, which included the addition of slot machines. The track is a 1 1/8 mile dirt course that has a one mile backstretch chute. The course is one mile in circumference, but the railing can actually be moved to change the circumference. The track originally had a one mile dirt oval with a 7 furlong turf oval before it was renovated in 2005.

Gulfstream Park currently shares the races of the Sunshine Millions with Santa Anita Park in California. It also features the Florida Derby and Donn Handicap, both of which are Grade I stakes races.
